A credential you can trust
This is what the American climber needs when choosing a guide and this is what the USMGA is providing. There are a number of other labels being used as credentials in the guiding industry. These include; certification, accreditation, professional membership, permits and insurance. None of these (except for IFMGA certification) is backed solidly by a standard. Our goal is to make it easier for you to choose a guide. All USMGA endorsed guides have been examined in the field and have proven that they meet the standard established by the IFMGA or one of its member associations. The USMGA is working to raise the standard of American guiding.

A need to educate the public
The USMGA also works to educate climbers and people or agencies involved with guides about guiding standards. Our goal is to educate the guiding community, the public, and land managers about the benefits of a strong guiding profession and to increase the demand for professional guides in this country.

Guides need a place to work
Historically access to the best climbing and guiding terrain in this country has been very limited for most guides and their clients. We will be working hard to open up access to more terrain so that professional guides and their clients will have the freedom to climb on our public lands just as other climbers do. We believe that climbers should not be penalized (denied access to national forests and parks) because their partner happens to be a guide.

We need to all work together
The USMGA is working to organize and direct the efforts of many volunteer, professional guides to improve the situation for guides in this country. All USMGA endorsed guides share a common background which will help to strengthen working relations and increase cooperation among professional guides
.
